Hagestad earned his fourth U.S. Open start by virtue of claiming the 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Sankaty Head Golf Club on Nantucket Island. He defeated Mark Costanza, 2 and 1, in the 36-hole final that was played over two days due to weather issues that plagued the championship leading up to the last match. This was the Newport Beach, Calif., native's second Mid-Am title. He defeated past champion Scott Harvey in 37 holes to win the 2016 championship at Stonewall in Pennsylvania. The following April, he became the first invited U.S. Mid-Amateur champion to make the cut at the Masters. He missed the cut at the tournament in April. He has also failed to qualify for the weekend in his three previous U.S. Open starts. He has represented the USA in the past three Walker Cups, all wins. He played the 2017 Match at his home course, The Los Angeles Country Club. A graduate of the University of Southern California, Hagestad is currently working on his MBA. He played sparingly for the Trojans men's golf team during his undergraduate days. He has competed in 12 U.S. Amateurs, reaching the Round of 16 in 2020 at Bandon Dunes and 2018 at Pebble Beach.
