The native of Chile nearly became the first alum of the Latin America Amateur Championship to win a major title at the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. Pereira held a one-stroke lead going to the 72nd hole, only to suffer a heartbreaking double bogey to miss the playoff by one stroke. Pereira, who played one season at Texas Tech University before turning pro in 2015 , won three Korn Ferry Tour events in the 2020-21 season to earn an automatic promotion to the PGA Tour for the 2021-22 campaign. His wins came in the 2020 Country Club de Bogota Championship, 2021 Rex Hospital Open and the 2021 BMW Charity Pro-Am. As an amateur, Pereira won the Chilean Professional Tour's Abierto Internacional de Las Brisas de Chicureo at the age of 17 over professionals Nico Geyger and Cristian Leon. At the 2019 Pan American Games, he took home a bronze medal in the individual competition.
