Lingmerth will make his fourth U.S. Open start after getting into the field as the first alternate from the Powell, Ohio, final qualifier. He replaced 2014 champion Martin Kaymer, who withdrew due to an injury. Lingmerth owns two professional victories, including the 2015 Memorial Tournament in a playoff over Justin Rose. He also won the 2012 Neediest Kid Championship on the Web.com Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour). Lingmerth attended West Florida for one year before transferring to the University of Arkansas for his final three seasons of eligibility. He was a two-time All-American for the Razorbacks and played on the European Palmer Cup Team in 2010. He turned professional later that year.
