The New Zealander will make his fourth U.S. Open start, thanks to shooting 8-under 135 at Kinsale Golf & Fitness Club and Wedgewood Golf & Country Club in Powell, Ohio. Lee, in 2008, became the youngest champion in U.S. Amateur history when he defeated Drew Kittleson in the championship match at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club's Course No. 2. But he turned professional following the 2009 Masters and thus forfeited his U.S. Open exemption. Lee, who was born in the Republic of Korea but moved to New Zealand at age 8, won the 2011 WNB Golf Classic on the Nationwide Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour), which helped him gain status on the PGA Tour for 2012. His lone PGA Tour victory is the 2015 Greenbrier Classic in a playoff over David Hearn, Kevin Kisner and Robert Streb. As an amateur, Lee won the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic, an event co-sanctioned by the European Tour (now DP World Tour) and PGA Tour of Australasia. He also was a semifinalist in the 2006 U.S. Junior Amateur. Lee represented New Zealand in the 2008 World Amateur Team Championship and played for the International side in the 2015 Presidents Cup.
