Became the fifth world No. 1 player to win the Masters, joining Ian Woosnam (1991), Fred Couples (1992), Tiger Woods (2001, 2002) and Dustin Johnson (2020). His victory at Augusta National Golf Club came two weeks after he ascended to the No. 1 spot with his win in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, where he defeated Kevin Kisner in the final. Broke through for his first PGA Tour win in a playoff over Patrick Cantlay at the WM Phoenix Open and then rallied to win the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Scheffler tied for seventh last year at Torrey Pines, his fourth U.S. Open start and second as a pro. Scheffler finished atop the 2019 Korn Ferry Tour standings after posting a pair of victories, including the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship, and then was named the PGA Tour's Rookie of the Year for the 2020 campaign. Scheffler edged Cameron Champ for low-amateur honors in the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills. A year earlier, he missed the cut at Oakmont Country Club, despite a first-round 69. He turned professional in 2018 after a successful four-year career at the University of Texas, earning the 2015 Phil Mickelson Award for being the nation's top freshman golfer. The 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur champion was a member of the victorious 2017 USA Walker Cup Team. He also was a quarterfinalist in the 2013 U.S. Amateur and member of the victorious 2016 USA World Amateur Team. He was a captain's pick for the 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup Team, and then defeated 2021 U.S. Open champion Jon Rahm in Sunday singles at Whistling Straits.
