The former East Carolina University standout is set to make his third U.S. Open start after being among the top 60 in the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 23. Born in Akron, Ohio, Varner III was raised in Gastonia, N.C., and became East Carolina's first player to win Conference USA Player of the Year honors. Although Varner III is still seeking his first victory on the PGA Tour, he does own a pair of wins overseas. He captured the 2016 Australian PGA Championship and earlier this year he won the PIF Saudi International on the Asian Tour when he converted a 92-foot eagle putt on the 72nd hole to edge Bubba Watson by a stroke. In April, he held his first solo 54-hole lead at the RBC Heritage, only to come up a stroke shy of winner Jordan Spieth. Varner was tied for second, a stroke behind Brooks Koepka, at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage State Park, only to have a disappointing final round to finish T-36.
