Ailing Spieth Grits Out 2-Over 72

Jordan Spieth wasn't sure he was going to make it to the first tee at The Country Club for the opening round of the U.S. Open. For the second time this year, the Texas native contracted a stomach virus, which caused him to forego his final practice round on Wednesday. (He also was ill at the Farmers Insurance Open in January in California). Spieth, the 2015 U.S. Open champion, still looked queasy prior to his 7:29 a.m. tee time with Max Homa and Adam Scott. Though he bogeyed three of the first four holes, Spieth managed to gut out a respectable 2-over 72, which marks the seventh time in a row he has opened with an over-par round since his victory at Chambers Bay. He declined to talk to the media after he finished, so his health and status for Friday are unknown.
