The 36-hole cut has been made, leaving 79 players to battle it out for the coveted U.S. Open Trophy. The third round, typically known as “Moving Day,” is underway and several competitors are making early pushes up the leader board, including 2016 U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson. In 2017, Justin Thomas’ 9-under 63 vaulted him from a tie for 24th into a share of second place and a spot in the final pairing on Sunday. Last year, Tony Finau and Daniel Berger made an even bigger jump, taking advantage of easier scoring conditions in the morning at Shinnecock Hills to post 4-under 66s, moving from T-45 into a share of the 54-hole lead. One last thing to keep in mind as players jockey for position on Saturday: 18 of the last 20 U.S. Open champions were inside the top 5 through 54 holes.
