Playoff Possibilities? What to Know If It Happens

There have been 33 playoffs in U.S. Open history, but none since 2008, when Tiger Woods outlasted Rocco Mediate in 19 holes at Torrey Pines. This year, it’s highly unlikely that a playoff would last that long since the format was changed in 2018 from an 18-hole playoff the day after the final round to a 2-hole aggregate playoff that would immediately follow the conclusion of play. This year, if needed, the playoff will take place on the par-3 17th and par-5 18th – two holes with plenty of history. If still tied, the players would continue rotating between those two holes in a sudden-death format until a champion is crowned. There have been eight three-way playoffs in 119 years, but only one in the last 55 years. In 1994, Ernie Els edged Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie at Oakmont.
