Scott Piercy flirted with one of the best starts in U.S. Open history on Thursday morning. The 40-year-old Las Vegas resident began the championship 5 under through his first six holes, birdieing the second, fourth and fifth, while also registering an eagle on the par-5 sixth. Piercy’s start matches the second-best in championship history, trailing only Andy Dillard, who birdied his first six holes at Pebble Beach in 1992. The joint runner-up in the 2016 U.S. Open has gained most of his advantage with his irons: his total combined proximity to the hole on Nos. 4-6 was just 12 feet (4 feet on No. 4, 6 feet on No. 5 and 2 feet for eagle on No. 6). Despite a double bogey on the eighth hole, Piercy led the field with 3.08 Strokes Gained on Approach Shots on his front nine to that point in the round.
